You should schedule your child’s first children’s dentist appointment to take place soon after their first tooth erupts. For best oral health, make sure they come in before their first birthday. Getting an early start on tooth and mouth exams may help us detect early stages of tooth decay while we can still treat them easily. Here’s what to expect during the first visit.
Your Child’s First Dental Visit
For children over 4 years old, we begin by going over brushing and flossing technique. While parents watch, we will explain most effective ways to keep excellent oral hygiene. Then we will take either cavity-detecting or growth development x-rays – or both, if necessary. After our dental hygienist gives your child’s teeth a thorough cleaning, the dentist will perform a tooth exam.
															This is when you can:
- Meet the dentist
 - Get firsthand knowledge of your child’s progress
 - Ask any questions that you may have

For patients less than 4 years old, we tailor the process to their age. With these children, we provide a thorough cleaning using polishing paste and a toothbrush. This is the most gentle, effective way to treat small teeth. As the ADA (American Dental Association) recommends, we apply a topical fluoride solution to discourage decay and promote strong tooth structure. Last, our dentist does an exam for a complete picture of your child’s oral hygiene.
